We are a family organization of the descendants of Adam Shipley, an Englishman, who came to Maryland in 1668 and settled in Anne Arundel County.
The phrase "of Maryland" in our name refers to the colony where Adam Shipley settled when he arrived from England. His descendants quickly began to spread out across the colonies, however, and today his descendants reside throughout the US. Consequently, we are a nationwide organization. In fact, only half of our current members actually reside in Maryland.
This website serves as the focal point for our organization, providing information about our current activities as well as a wide variety of Shipley heritage materials. This website is an ongoing project, and we have considerably more material on-hand that we plan to post. Please check back often to see what's new; you will find it listed in the New Postings- Index page.
Founded in 1925, we are an active organization, hosting a family
picnic each summer and a luncheon each fall, publishing two newsletters each year, and sponsoring ongoing genealogical research and publications. We also host a members-only Facebook page for Shipleys to connect and share family information with one another (please see Links section).
Our first genealogy book was published in 1938, and our genealogical information has increased significantly over the ensuing years. Extensive updates were published in 1968, 2002, and 2010. Copies of the latter two book editions are still available for purchase online (please see For Sale section). A new edition is currently being prepared by our Book Committee, with publication projected in 2025. It will update births and deaths through 2021, and will also correct and expand previously published family lines using new research and information supplied by our members.
In addition to our published books, we also host a separate, specialized website that provides our members with online access to our entire genealogical database of over 40,000 individuals (please see Links section).
Take time to peruse each section of our website. We sincerely hope you find our information useful for your personal genealogical research. If you are not currently a member of The Shipleys of Maryland, we invite you to join us so that you can benefit from our recurring activities and member-only resources. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or would like more information.
